Missionary Turned Entertainer / Evangelist
Originally a small-town farm boy, after Bob went to Bible college and university he spent several months as a missionary in Lithuania. But his love for juggling and wacky sense of humour drew him to the stage full time in 1995. Since then he has performed all over the world while staying firmly grounded in his faith and very active in his church.

“It was all we hoped it would be. Bob’s stage presence is superb, both witty and winning. He wowed the old and young alike. His juggling acts are truly professional, yet he makes a clear presentation of the Gospel. I strongly recommend “Comedy in Motion” to churches and camps alike. We were absolutely thrilled with the way the crowd responded to your performance. Nothing we have done before to get a hearing from unchurched people has been as effective. I strongly endorse your ministry.”
“As a church, we were also interested in the message behind the show. For us, this was a prime opportunity to build a bridge to our community that would allow us to share the good news of Jesus Christ. The combination of Bob’s superior entertainment skills combined with his evident ability to communicate to large groups makes his show one that sticks out from the rest.”
“If you are a church looking at some type of community outreach event, Bob is the man for the job. His rates are reasonable…and, compared with what you are getting, they are practically irrelevant.”
“What an amazing show! And just “what the doctor ordered” for the pastors and Christian Leaders who need encouragement and fun.”
“Bob wowed our audience this past month at our annual banquet. His talent and ability to connect with the audience is absolutely amazing. Bob’s performance made our evening such a success that we have had one of the largest financial responses to our appeal. You’re thrilled when you can finish an evening of entertainment for nearly 600 people, ask them for money and still have them thanking you for inviting them to a fundraising event, you’ve got a winning show! Booking Bob Cates will make you look like the smartest person in your organization.”
“Bob presented his Comedy in Motion show to our 100th National Convention in Ottawa. He had the entire audience spellbound with crazy antics and first-rate entertainment. A hallmark of Bob’s work: it is a clean show – very good for the entire family. Bob is great to work with and pays careful attention to details. Highly recommended! Your performance wowed the audience, plus showed people how great entertainment can also be clean and fun in a Christian context. Well done.”
“Bob Cates was perfect for our event. He not only was entertaining for the teens, but delivered the gospel message as well. He was easy to work with and met all of our requests. If you are planning an event that needs entertainment, Bob Cates and Comedy in Motion is just what you are looking for.”
“I direct a weekend event for high school students called Pitch & Praise which has a 34 year history and draws about 2,000 people from around the province of Ontario. This year Bob Cates came to the event and performed several stunts in our General Sessions, conducted a juggling workshop for students, and performed a full show late on the final night of the event. Bob’s ability to juggle is phenomenal, and his ability to engage the crowd with wit and humour and participation in his stunts really takes his performances to another level of excellence. Our audience wasn’t simply spell-bound, they were having a great time with Bob and felt very endeared to him by the end of the show. I simply don’t know any other Canadian performers who are on par with Bob.”
“We appreciate your ministry and your Gospel emphasis. Our families couldn’t stop talking about the show and we are very pleased with the outcome of the evening.”
“Thank you so much for a fantastic show. You added a finishing touch of excellence and all with the message of why we did Upward (Jesus Christ).”
“Comedy In Motion” was exactly that. A delightful fun filled, fast moving, entertaining performance for young and old alike. Bob Cates “brings it” like none other I’ve seen. We appreciate your ministry and your Gospel emphasis. Our families couldn’t stop talking about the show and we are very pleased with the outcome of the evening.”
Hiring Comedy in Motion for our Fun Five Days kids camp event was a huge success. Five Fun Days is a community event with 140 to 150 day camp children plus 40 teenager volunteers where most of them do not know the Gospel. The booking process was smooth and easy to understand. The day of the event for set up and organizing was a planners dream as Comedy in Motion had everything worked out with all the details taken care of.
The audience was thoroughly entertained by the really cool tricks and all the side jokes. Bob Cates interaction with audience members was funny and very exciting to watch audience members participate in some of the tricks. There were many very positive compliments about the high quality of the show.
The Gospel was told in a very truthful way. Because Five Fun Days is a day camp sponsored by Grace Bible Chapel for the local community, a lot of the audience learned more about God and his promise of salvation. Most people were very happy to hear the Gospel message and we believe God will work in a positive way with them as seeds are planted and the Holy Spirit can help them grow. Comedy in Motion was an excellent way to tie in a fun filled, edge of your seat entertainment event and also learn more about God at the same time…a perfect fit for the vision and mission of Five Fun Days. Thank you ever so much for an excellent time.
“We have been delighted to have Bob perform at Family Camp several times over the years. Over the last 15 years I have hired entertainers for various functions and I have never seen anyone with such a vast array of positive qualities and entertaining abilities as in Bob.
Bob is very professional in every way. He is polite, courteous, accommodating, promptly responds to emails in the booking process, and always arrives for performances on time.
Bob’s show has tremendous variety (juggling, unicycle, plate spinning, yo-yo tricks, and dance revolution to name a few). In the years we’ve had him he is continually adding new incredible acts to his show. His presentation is highly engaging. He skillfully and frequently involves participants from the audience, and he is a master at interspersing clean humour throughout the evening. Our Family Camp planning team has particularly appreciated that Bob’s presentation has a wide appeal to people of all ages. Not only does his comedy and humour leave people roaring with laughter but his physical dexterity, tricks, and talent leaves people astounded.
Bob, my highest recommendation goes to you. Keep on!”
Faith-Based Events FAQ
Actually, he’s a Christian everything. But you probably mean “Is Bob a Christian stand up comedian?” In that case, the answer is no. A stand up comedian typically performs his routine as a monologue, usually without props. While Bob does deliver comedy for several minutes in the show without props, most of his routines involve performing extraordinary skills or juggling routines in a comedic fashion. In addition he interacts with the crowd, and also gets some volunteers to help during the show. While “comedy juggler” may be a close descriptor – “comedy variety act” would be better since many of the things he does in the show are not technically juggling. (Unicycle, Poi Swinging, Memory Skills, etc). When he speaks about his faith on stage, he does it out of “character” separate from the performance. So, Yes, he is a Christian. Yes, he’s often called a comedian. But he’s not technically a “Christian Comedian” in the sense that he jokes about faith matters or things that only believers would get. Get it?
The normal show length is about an hour. If he’s speaking and has freedom, he would add 15-25 minutes to that. But show length and speaking time is always flexible. They have lots of material though and could perform 2 different 1 hour shows, or five 20 minute shows, etc.
Yes. When Bob and Jane were married in 2007, Jane quit her job and joined the business full time. She helps both on stage and off stage. They banter a bit during the show. She is kind of like Paul Shaffer to David Letterman.
If there are planes that go there, they can travel there. If you want to rent tech equipment from them, they have to be able to drive there. Usually that would mean shows in Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Vermont, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky.
“Evangelism is speaking words. It’s sharing news. It’s being faithful to God by presenting the good news… that Christ, by his death and resurrection, has secured a way for a holy God and sinful people to be reconciled. God will produce true conversions when we present this good news (see John 1:13; Acts 18:9-10). In short, evangelism is presenting the good news freely and trusting God to convert people (see Acts 16:14). “Salvation comes from the Lord” (Jonah 2:9; cf. John 1:12-13).”
What is a healthy Church by Mark Dever
No. Bob first performs a one hour show, and then dynamically speaks and shares the gospel after, out of character, explaining Law and Grace, for about 10-25 minutes. (The time frame is always flexible and up to you).
This method allows him to keep the entertainment the entertainment, and the gospel the gospel. The audience is made aware of the structure of the performance at the beginning of the show so that everyone knows what’s coming.
Bob and Jane have been greatly influenced by direct evangelism training from Ray Comfort, Living Waters, and Way of the Master Ministries.
Not in the traditional sense you might be thinking. After explaining Who God is, Who We Are, (our sin problem) and What God Did so that we don’t have to go to hell, Bob explains what our response should be (repentance and faith) and how we can do that by coming to God in prayer. He sometimes refers to Psalm 51 as an example prayer. He usually strongly urges the listeners to go before God before leaving the building or before going to bed that night and confess their sins (repent) and believe the Gospel (put their faith in Christ) before it’s too late. Sometimes volunteers are arranged in advance to counsel if needed. At other times, the pastor will come up and do a traditional altar call following the message. It’s totally up to the presenters what they want to do.
Some of Bob’s hobbies (besides juggling) include: snowboarding, scuba diving, one wheel boarding, riding his Can Am Spyder motor bike, playing video games (mostly car racing sims and Overwatch), reading books, reading blogs, studying the Bible, home theatre, and playing with his 13 year old son.
Jane loves anything to do with decorating or home decor, home renovations, shopping, reading, cooking, riding her Spyder with Bob, and being a mother. They both love and serve at their church in various ways. Jane serves on the children’s ministry team and Bob leads a small group. They both love garage saling and thrift store searching.
If you want to spoil them back stage, Bob loves Jumbo Sour Keys, Ruffles Salt n Vinegar chips, and cold Diet Coke. Jane likes, Rold Gold Pretzel Sticks, Smarties (only available in Canada) and Iced Tea or Tim Hortons Coffee.
